Today we decided to brave the cold winds and jump in the car and head to Bagdad for a very rugged bush walk to see some amazing caves set at the top of a steep hill.
GETTING THERE:
Drive down brooker...over Bridgewater Bridge and follow signs to Brighton. Head through Brighton, Kempsey and Mangalore and towards Bagdad. Pass the Bagdad sign and travel a bit further down the road then take a right turn off to Chauncey Vale road, follow this road and you will come to browns caves.
You will come to gate, open gate but remembering to close it on your way through as it's a wildlife sanctuary. Follow the road down past the BBQ area to a small building where you can sign in the log book. Back track past BBQ area and on left you will see a small sign saying car park and info area, where you can park your car.
THE TRACK:
There is track off to left and one straight ahead which can be confusing but take the track to the left, not the 'Day Dawn' track.
The first 50 minutes of track is quite steep and the track is unruly and rocky.
After the climb you will come across the Brown's Caves that stem for about 200m along a cliff edge.
After passing the caves it only takes approx 15-20 minutes to get back to the car park as the path becomes a lot more flat making it easier.
TIPS:
- After the turn off to Chauncey Valley there is a house on the left (sign out front) they sell free range eggs, one dozen for $3 (*wink)
- Take care along the cliff area as it's a good distance down if you fall
- $2 per person entry at the gate required - donations box. So make sure to take some coins with you.
